Al and I became friends at Boulevard Elementary School. We had drifted into differnt groups in middle school. At Heights High an interesting relationship developed between us. Al was a tough guy, and I was the artsy weirdo musician type. Al did things to toughen me up. The crazy bastard accidentally scratched my throat with a switchblade during a movie in a class once! I was pissed, but I lied when the teacher asked how I cut my neck to show Al I wasn't a pussy. Later we laughed our asses off about that. Al was also my protector. I remember an incident where some person assaulted me at a football game and before I had time to think of what to do next, Al fought that guy in my defense, but then in true Al Gerlosky style, he flipped the policeman who attempted to grab Al from behind in effort to break up the fight. When Al saw it was a cop he said, "Hey, I didn't know you were a cop!" We laughed our asses off about that one too. We were able to make each other laugh. It's the laughs I hold in my memory when I think about Al. My condolences and respect to his family.

Al was certainly a "one of a kind". I went through Roxboro Junior High with him. We probably spent too much time shooting pool in his basement and at other cultural meccas such as Wally's Pool Hall. He was a good hearted person inside his rough exterior. May he rest in peace.

I remember Al as one  of the "tough guys"  crowd as Roxboro Jr. High,  but he was a really gentle person . He wasn't the kind of guy that  needed  to pick on anyone  to prove how "tough" he was.   He was a real cutup as well- in  one of those Roxboro  yearbooks him  and all his buddies all wore those cheap woodshop safety glasses as a joke in their pictues.

Now, I  must have that yearbook around somewhere...

Rest in Peace Al
